Overview
Fire Aspect sets whatever you hit alight, adding damage over time on top of the swing. On paper that is a straightforward damage upgrade; in practice it is one of the most situational sword enchantments in the game, and whether it belongs on your weapon depends entirely on what you kill. Against a player or a tough single mob it is genuinely strong, because the burn keeps ticking while you reposition and it stops a wounded opponent from healing away. Against anything you are farming it is actively harmful, since burning mobs cook their own drops — a burned cow gives steak instead of leather and raw beef, and that is fine until you needed the leather. The bigger problem is knockback plus fire near anything flammable: a burning creeper running into your wooden base is a story most players only tell once. There is also the interaction with water, which extinguishes the burn immediately, so it does nothing in the ocean. Keep it on a dedicated PvP or boss sword, keep it off the sword you take to a mob farm, and never put it on the axe you use near a forest.
Single tough targets — players, piglin brutes, a ravager — where damage that continues after the swing is worth more than the drops you lose to the fire.
Sets the target on fire on hit, adding damage over time and automatically cooking any meat the mob drops. Do not use it on a mob farm where you want the drops intact.
The highest level of Fire Aspect is II. It is standard, so it sits in the enchanting table's own offer pool.
At weight 2 it takes up about 6–8% of the offer pool for an item that accepts it; the larger that share, the less rerolling a level-30 table costs you.
How to get it
Enchant a sword at a table with 15 bookshelves, or apply a book; level II is the maximum and burns the target for 8 seconds. Its weight of 2 makes it an uncommon table roll compared with Sharpness at 10.
Tips
- Never take it to a mob farm: burning mobs cook their drops and destroy leather, and fire ruins item collection.
- Water puts the burn out instantly, so it contributes nothing to drowned or guardian fights.
- A burning creeper is a fire hazard in a wooden base — keep it off the sword you carry at home.
- It stacks with Sharpness and Looting, so the conflict is tactical rather than mechanical.
What each level does
Here is what each level does. II is worth the trip, and you can reach it by combining two I books on an anvil rather than rolling for it.

How to get it
Enchanting table or an enchanted book.
Fifteen bookshelves and the level-30 slot is the fastest route; anything less lowers both the level and the pool you draw from.
Command
Cheats on: the first command enchants what is in your hand with Fire Aspect II, and the second spawns the finished item. The component syntax below replaced the old NBT tag in 1.20.5.
