Powder Snow Bucket

Powder Snow Bucket

Overview

A Powder Snow Bucket carries the one block that cannot be moved any other way. Powder snow looks like a snow layer and behaves like quicksand: entities that step into it sink, take no fall damage at all, and begin to freeze — a frost overlay after a moment, then damage every two seconds once the freeze meter fills, about seven seconds in. That combination makes it a genuinely good tool. A column of powder snow at the bottom of a shaft is a fall-damage-free landing pad that needs no water, and a pit of it in front of a base is a trap that damages and slows anything that walks in. Leather boots — and only leather boots, of any tier — let you walk on top of it instead of sinking, so a base with a powder-snow moat is safe for you and hostile to everything else. Collect it by using an empty bucket on a powder snow block, or by leaving a cauldron out in a snowy biome during snowfall, which fills it over time and makes powder snow renewable without travelling.

Building fall-damage-free landing pads and elevator shafts, freezing hostile mobs in a trap, and moving a block that no pickaxe, shovel or Silk Touch tool will collect.

Powder Snow Bucket is a tool item in Minecraft 1.21.4. It does not stack — each one takes its own slot. Nothing on the crafting grid is made from it.

How to get it

Use an empty Bucket on a powder snow block in a snowy biome, or leave a cauldron outdoors in snowfall — it fills to full after roughly 5 to 10 minutes of snow and can then be scooped.

Tips

  • Wear Leather Boots to walk on the surface — no other armour tier has that property, netherite included.
  • Freezing damage starts after about 7 seconds in the snow and then ticks every 2 seconds, so a shallow pit only slows mobs.
  • Landing in powder snow cancels fall damage entirely, which makes it the cheapest bottom-of-the-shaft safety net.
  • Strays, polar bears and snow golems are immune to freezing, so a snow trap does nothing in a snowy biome's own mobs.

Version notes

Powder snow, the bucket interaction and freezing damage all arrived in 1.17 (Caves & Cliffs part one) and are unchanged in 1.21.4.
