Feather Falling

Feather Falling

Max 4

Overview

Fall damage kills more experienced players than any mob does, because it is the one damage type that arrives with no warning and no fight to lose. Feather Falling cuts it, and crucially it stacks with Protection rather than competing with it — so boots can carry both, and a full set of Protection IV with Feather Falling IV boots turns falls that would have been fatal into survivable mistakes. That combination is why the boots slot is the single most valuable armour piece for anyone who flies. An elytra pilot who clips a hillside, a cave explorer who steps into an open shaft, a builder who missed a scaffold: all of them survive with these boots and all of them die without. It reduces damage rather than removing it, so a long enough drop still kills — this is insurance, not immunity, and Slow Falling remains the only true answer to a big fall. Because it is boots-only and stacks with the general protections, there is essentially no argument against putting it on every pair of boots you make. Combine two level III books for level IV rather than hoping the table rolls it.

Surviving falls you did not plan — a missed elytra landing, an open cave shaft, a scaffold that ended early — which is the commonest cause of death for well-equipped players.

Reduces fall damage only. It stacks with Protection, which makes it one of the most valuable boot enchantments in the game — a fall that would kill you outright becomes survivable.

IV is as high as Feather Falling goes. It is a standard enchantment, which means the enchanting table can roll it for you.

Weight 5 gives it roughly 14% of the pool a table draws from for an item in its slot, and that share is about how often a level-30 table puts it in front of you.

How to get it

Enchant boots at a table, buy the book from a librarian, or combine 2 level III books on an anvil for level IV. Its weight of 5 makes it a reasonably common roll, and it stacks with Protection rather than conflicting.

Tips

  • It stacks with Protection, so boots should carry both rather than choosing between them.
  • Elytra pilots should treat level IV boots as mandatory kit; a mistimed rocket at height is otherwise fatal.
  • It reduces rather than removes damage — Slow Falling is the only complete answer to a long drop.
  • Fall damage ignores the chestplate entirely, which is why the boots slot deserves the investment.

What each level does

Here is what each level does. IV is worth the trip, and you can reach it by combining two III books on an anvil rather than rolling for it.

Feather Falling IV reduces fall damage by 48%.

Properties

An enchanting table can offer it directly, and a librarian villager will sell it as a book — rerolling a librarian's trade by breaking and replacing their lectern is the cheapest route to it.

How to get it

Enchanting table, or bought from a librarian villager.

The level-30 slot at a fifteen-bookshelf table is where to look; a smaller ring means lower levels and a thinner offer pool.
