Overview
A tripwire hook is half of a trigger. Place two of them facing each other up to 40 blocks apart, run string between them, and anything that walks through the string — a player, a mob, an arrow, a dropped item — powers both hooks for as long as it is in contact. That makes it the only entity detector in the game that works across a long span without a pressure plate under every block, and the standard mechanism for a base alarm, a corridor trap or an automatic door in a wide entrance. String is nearly invisible against most floors, which is the point in a trap and a nuisance when you are the one walking through. The counter is shears: cutting a tripwire with shears removes it without triggering the circuit, which is exactly how you disarm the arrow-trap corridor in a jungle temple without taking a face full of arrows. A hook can also be used on its own as a decorative wall fitting. It generates in jungle temples as part of the trap, which is where most players first see one.
Detecting anything crossing a line up to 40 blocks long — base alarms, corridor traps, automatic doors in wide entrances, and detecting items or mobs that a pressure plate would miss.
Tripwire Hook is a redstone block in Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.4. Tripwire Hook has a crafting recipe, so it is renewable as long as you can source its ingredients. With a hardness of 0 it gives way immediately under almost any tool.
Any tool works, and so do bare hands. Mining it returns the block itself, so it is safe to relocate. It is transparent, which matters when you are managing light levels.
With a blast resistance of only 0 it will not survive an explosion. Sixty-four fit in one inventory slot. The recipe calls for Iron Ingot, Stick, and Oak Planks.
It is used to craft Crossbow and Trapped Chest.
How to get it
Craft it from 1 iron ingot, 1 stick and 1 wooden plank. String comes from spiders, from cobwebs cut with a sword, or from cats, which bring string as a gift after sleeping on your bed.
Tips
- Cut a tripwire with shears to disarm it silently; any other tool triggers the circuit as it breaks.
- The span between 2 hooks can be up to 40 blocks, which no pressure plate arrangement can match for cost.
- Tripwire detects dropped items too, so it makes a cheap detector for a farm's output crossing a corridor.
- In a jungle temple, shear the wire before touching anything: the dispensers behind it fire arrows immediately.
Properties
Tripwire Hook resists blasts at 0, which is not enough to survive anything explosive nearby. Light passes through it, and it emits none of its own. A single slot takes 64, the usual full stack.
