Overview
Scaffolding is the block that solves building at height. Place a column of it and you climb by holding the jump key and descend by holding sneak, with no ladders, no water and no risk of falling out, and it extends sideways up to 6 blocks from a supported column without any support underneath — so a single tower gives you a working platform 13 blocks wide. The best part is dismantling: break the bottom block of a column and the entire column above it breaks in a chain and drops as items, so taking down a 60-block tower is one click and a walk to collect the drops. It is cheap, made from bamboo and string, and bamboo is renewable at an absurd rate, so scaffolding is effectively free once you have a bamboo farm. It can be waterlogged, which makes it useful for underwater construction as well, and mobs cannot path up it. The one limitation to remember is the 6-block horizontal reach: extend past that and the unsupported end breaks and falls. It is the single biggest quality-of-life improvement for anyone who builds tall.

How to get it
Craft 6 scaffolding from 6 bamboo and 1 string. Bamboo grows in bamboo jungles and regrows in minutes, so a small farm supplies more scaffolding than any build will ever need.

Scaffolding has a blast resistance of 0, so any explosion nearby destroys it. It lets light through and emits no light of its own. 64 fit in a slot — a full stack. Fire takes to it quickly — encouragement 15, burn 100 — which makes it a poor neighbour for lava or a lit campfire. An axe is the fastest choice here. A tool of the wrong class is no better than your fist — the speed bonus is tied to the block's own tool tag. As furnace fuel it burns for 20 seconds — 2 smelting operations.
