Overview
A repeater does three separate jobs, and most players only learn two of them. First, it repeats: a signal entering a repeater leaves it at full strength 15, which is how you carry redstone further than the 15 blocks dust can reach. Second, it delays: right-clicking it steps the delay through 1, 2, 3 and 4 redstone ticks, which is how you time a sequence, stagger a set of pistons, or lengthen a pulse that would otherwise be too short for a sticky piston to hold onto. Third, it is a diode — signal passes only in the direction the arrow points, which is how you stop a circuit feeding back into itself. The lesser-known function is locking. Feed a signal into the side of a repeater from another repeater or a comparator and it locks, freezing whatever state it currently holds until the side signal is removed. That makes a repeater a one-bit memory cell, which is how latches, combination locks and sequencers are built. Repeaters also transmit through the block in front of them, powering it strongly, which matters for firing pistons and opening doors.

How to get it
Craft a repeater from 3 stone, 2 redstone torches and 1 redstone dust. The stone must be smelted cobblestone rather than the raw block, so build a furnace before you plan a large redstone project.
Tips
- Each right-click adds 1 redstone tick of delay, up to 4; 1 redstone tick is 2 game ticks, or a tenth of a second.
- Signal into the side from another repeater locks it, freezing its output — that is a memory cell in 1 block.
- A repeater strongly powers the block in front of it, which is how you fire a piston through a wall.
- Chain repeaters every 15 blocks along a long dust line, or the signal will die before it arrives.
