Redstone Wire

Redstone Wire

Redstone

Overview

Redstone wire is redstone dust placed on the ground, and it is the medium every circuit in the game is carried on. A signal entering it starts at strength 15 and loses exactly 1 per block travelled, so dust carries a signal exactly 15 blocks and then stops — extending it further needs a repeater, which is the single most common reason a beginner's circuit does not reach its target. Dust connects automatically to adjacent dust, to components facing it, and up or down a single block step as long as the step is not covered by an opaque block, which is why a staircase of dust works but a dust line under a slab does not. It powers the block it sits on weakly and any component directly beside it. Dust can only be placed on a full opaque block face, so it will not sit on glass, slabs, fences or hoppers. Visually the brightness of the wire shows the current signal strength, which is a genuinely useful debugging aid: follow the line and see where it fades to nothing. It is destroyed by water and by pistons.

Carrying a signal from a switch to a mechanism, connecting every other redstone component together, and showing signal strength visually so a circuit can be debugged by eye.

Redstone Wire is a redstone block in Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.4. It cannot be obtained in Survival — it exists for Creative mode and commands. A hardness of 0 means it is one of the quicker blocks to clear.

No specific tool is required to collect it. Instead of dropping itself it yields Redstone Dust. Because it is transparent it does not block light.

A blast resistance of 0 means a single creeper will clear it away. It is not used in any crafting recipe.

How to get it

Redstone dust is placed as wire; the dust comes from redstone ore, which peaks at Y -59 and drops 4 to 5 dust per block, multiplied by Fortune. A block of redstone uncrafts into 9 dust.

Tips

  • Signal drops 1 per block: 15 blocks is the maximum reach before a repeater is needed to restore it.
  • Dust climbs 1 block up or down, but not if the higher block is opaque and sits over the line.
  • Water washes redstone dust away instantly, so route wiring away from any farm that floods.
  • The wire's brightness shows its current strength — follow it visually to find where a long line dies.

Properties

Redstone Wire resists blasts at 0, which is not enough to survive anything explosive nearby. Light passes through it, and it emits none of its own. Broken normally it drops Redstone Dust rather than itself; Silk Touch is what returns the block, and Fortune raises the ordinary drop instead.
