Overview
A powered rail is what actually makes a minecart go. Given a redstone signal it accelerates any cart passing over it up to the game's maximum cart speed of 8 blocks per second; with no signal it does the opposite and brakes the cart to a stop, which makes it a station block as well as an accelerator. The practical question every rail builder asks is spacing, and the answer on flat ground is roughly one powered rail every 38 blocks for a cart carrying a player — closer for a loaded cart, and much closer on an incline, where a rising track needs a booster every few blocks. Six rails come from six gold ingots, one stick and one redstone dust, which makes gold the limiting resource on any long line and is the main reason players barter with piglins or mine a badlands before building a railway. A powered rail can be triggered by a redstone torch beside it, a lever, a block powered from below, or a detector rail further up the track, which is the standard self-powering station design.

Minecraft classifies Powered Rail as a redstone block. A crafting table turns its ingredients into Powered Rail. Its hardness of 0.7 makes it a normal, unhurried block to mine.
You can break it by hand without losing the drop. It drops as the same block you mined. Light passes through it, so it will not darken the space behind it.
It offers almost no protection from explosions (0.7 blast resistance). A full stack holds 64. It is crafted from Gold Ingot, Stick, and Redstone Dust.
Nothing on the crafting grid is made from it.
How to get it
Craft 6 powered rails from 6 gold ingots, 1 stick and 1 redstone dust. Gold is the bottleneck, so barter with piglins or mine a badlands where gold generates from Y 32 to Y 256.
Tips
- Place 1 powered rail every 38 blocks on flat ground; inclines need them far more often.
- An unpowered powered rail brakes a cart, which is exactly what you want at a station.
- Power it with a redstone torch under the block beside it — the tidiest way to keep a line lit.
- Gold is the real cost of a railway, so mine a badlands or barter before planning a long route.
How long it takes to break
At a hardness of 0.7, Powered Rail takes 1.1 seconds to punch out and 0.15 seconds with a netherite-tier tool of the correct class.
You are looking at 0.2 seconds on iron and 0.15 on diamond — the diamond step is where the time actually falls.
There is no tier requirement to worry about. Any tool, or none, returns the drop; the numbers below just say how fast.
Efficiency contributes its level squared plus one to tool speed, which makes Efficiency V roughly 3 times faster than the plain tool.

Properties
Powered Rail has a blast resistance of 0.7, so any explosion nearby destroys it. It lets light through and emits no light of its own. Stack size is 64 — the standard full stack. A pickaxe is fastest here; any other class mines it at bare-hand speed, because the bonus only applies to the class the block is tagged for.
