Overview
A detector rail emits a redstone signal while a minecart is on top of it, which makes it the input half of every automated rail system. The obvious use is triggering something as a cart arrives — opening a door, lighting a station, firing a dispenser, or powering the next stretch of powered rail so a line effectively pushes itself. The less obvious use is measurement: a comparator reading a detector rail with a container minecart on it outputs a signal proportional to how full that cart is, exactly as it would for a chest. That turns a detector rail into an inventory sensor, which is how automated storage systems know whether an incoming hopper minecart is loaded or empty and route it accordingly. Six rails come from six iron ingots, a stone pressure plate and a redstone dust, so they are cheap enough to place liberally. A common pattern is a detector rail immediately before a powered rail on a long line, so each cart powers its own next segment and the line needs no permanent redstone at all.

Detector Rail counts as a redstone block in Minecraft 1.21.4. A crafting table turns its ingredients into Detector Rail. Its hardness of 0.7 makes it a normal, unhurried block to mine.
You can break it by hand without losing the drop. It drops as the same block you mined. Light passes through it, so it will not darken the space behind it.
It offers almost no protection from explosions (0.7 blast resistance). A full stack holds 64. It is crafted from Iron Ingot, Stone Pressure Plate, and Redstone Dust.
Nothing on the crafting grid is made from it.
How to get it
Craft 6 detector rails from 6 iron ingots, 1 stone pressure plate and 1 redstone dust. Iron is the main cost, and a single mineshaft trip usually supplies enough for a full line.
