Overview
An activator rail does something to the minecart rather than to the track. When powered, it activates whatever passes over it: a TNT minecart is primed and detonates a few seconds later, a hopper minecart is switched off so it stops collecting, and a cart carrying a player or a mob ejects its passenger. Each of those is a specific tool. TNT minecarts on activator rails are the standard method for automated mining and for large-scale demolition, because a train of them can be launched down a tunnel and primed at a fixed point. The hopper toggle is what lets an automated storage system stop a collection cart from picking items back up as it returns. And the ejection behaviour is how mob transport systems unload their cargo — a minecart mob elevator dumps a villager or a mob exactly where the activator rail sits. Six rails come from six iron ingots, two sticks and a redstone torch. The rail does nothing at all when unpowered, so it is safe to build a line across one. It is also the only rail that interacts with a cart's contents rather than its motion, which is worth remembering when a system misbehaves.

Activator Rail counts as a redstone block in Minecraft 1.21.4. Activator Rail has a crafting recipe, so it is renewable as long as you can source its ingredients. At a hardness of 0.7 it takes a moment to break but never slows a build down.
Any tool works, and so do bare hands. Mining it returns the block itself, so it is safe to relocate. It is transparent, which matters when you are managing light levels.
With a blast resistance of only 0.7 it will not survive an explosion. Sixty-four fit in one inventory slot. The recipe calls for Iron Ingot, Stick, and Redstone Torch.
It is not used in any crafting recipe.
How to get it
Craft 6 activator rails from 6 iron ingots, 2 sticks and 1 redstone torch. Everything in that recipe is available as soon as you have iron and redstone, which is well before a railway is worth building.
Tips
- It does nothing while unpowered, so a line can run across one safely until you switch it on.
- TNT minecarts primed on an activator rail explode a few seconds later, which allows a timed demolition train.
- It ejects passengers, which is the standard unloading mechanism for a villager transport system.
- Use it to switch a hopper minecart off on the return leg so it does not re-collect what it just delivered.

Activator Rail has a hardness of 0.7. By hand that is 1.1 seconds per block; with the correct tool at netherite tier it is 0.15 seconds.
You are looking at 0.2 seconds on iron and 0.15 on diamond — the diamond step is where the time actually falls.
There is no tier requirement to worry about. Any tool, or none, returns the drop; the numbers below just say how fast.
The Efficiency formula is level² + 1 added to tool speed — at V that is about 3 times the unenchanted rate.

Properties
With 0.7 blast resistance Activator Rail goes down to any nearby explosion. It is transparent to light and produces no light. A single slot takes 64, the usual full stack. The block is tagged for pickaxes, and only that class gets the speed bonus; everything else mines at bare-hand rate.
