Overview

A jukebox plays music discs, and it is the only block that does. Insert a disc and it plays once through, audible for about 65 blocks, then ejects nothing — the disc stays inside until you click the jukebox again to pop it out. The reason it matters beyond decoration is that a comparator behind a jukebox outputs a signal strength unique to the disc inside it, from 1 to 15, which lets a redstone circuit tell which record is loaded. That is used for hidden doors keyed to a specific disc and for jukebox-driven display systems. Discs themselves come from three sources: a creeper killed by a skeleton's arrow drops one at random, which is the classic method; several generate in dungeon, mineshaft, stronghold, bastion and woodland mansion chests; and disc 5 is assembled from nine disc fragments found only in ancient city chests. Playing a disc also pacifies nothing and attracts nothing, so it is purely for atmosphere — although a jukebox playing a record makes parrots nearby dance, which is one of the game's more charming details.

Playing music discs for atmosphere across roughly 65 blocks, and giving a comparator a disc-specific signal strength so a redstone circuit can identify exactly which record is loaded inside it.

Jukebox is a functional block in Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.4. A crafting table turns its ingredients into Jukebox. Its hardness of 2 makes it a normal, unhurried block to mine.

Mining it returns the block itself, so it is safe to relocate. A full stack holds 64. It is crafted from Oak Planks and Diamond.

Nothing on the crafting grid is made from it.

How to get it

Craft it from 8 wooden planks and 1 diamond. That diamond is why most players build exactly one, usually in a base they spend time in rather than a temporary camp.

Tips

  • A comparator behind a jukebox outputs a different strength for every disc, which makes a record a physical key.
  • Get discs by luring a creeper in front of a skeleton — the skeleton's arrow kill drops a random disc.
  • Disc 5 is crafted from 9 disc fragments, which generate only in ancient city chests in the deep dark.
  • Parrots dance to a playing jukebox within a few blocks, which is worth setting up once for the sight of it.

How long it takes to break

Jukebox sits at hardness 2: 3 seconds per block with your fists, 0.35 with the correct netherite tool.

Iron manages 0.5 seconds and diamond 0.4, which makes iron the tier that changes how this block feels.

There is no tier requirement to worry about. Any tool, or none, returns the drop; the numbers below just say how fast.

The Efficiency formula is level² + 1 added to tool speed — at V that is about 3.5 times the unenchanted rate.

Properties

Jukebox resists blasts at 6, which usually is not enough when something explodes nearby. Light does not pass through it, and it emits none of its own. One inventory slot holds 64, the normal full stack. The block is tagged for axes, and only that class gets the speed bonus; everything else mines at bare-hand rate. As furnace fuel it burns for 15 seconds — one and a half smelting operations.
