Properties
With 3 blast resistance Deepslate Diamond Ore usually goes down to a nearby explosion. It is fully opaque and produces no light. A single slot takes 64, the usual full stack. The block is tagged for pickaxes, and only that class gets the speed bonus; everything else mines at bare-hand rate. Broken normally it drops Diamond rather than itself; Silk Touch is what returns the block, and Fortune raises the ordinary drop instead.

Where it generates
Diamond gets denser the deeper you go, and Y=-59 is where that stops paying: bedrock fills the five layers beneath it and lava lakes pool at Y=-54, so Y=-59 is both the densest reachable layer and the practical mining level, with Y=-53 the safer compromise. Fortune III averages roughly two and a bit diamonds per ore block, more than doubling a mining trip. Diamonds gate the enchanting table, the Nether's ancient debris, and every netherite upgrade after it.
Diamond density rises continuously the deeper you go, but bedrock fills Y=-64 up to about Y=-59, so Y=-59 is the deepest layer that still holds mineable ore and the densest one a player can reach. A second, rarer "large" distribution generates buried with no air exposure, which is why open-cave prospecting finds less diamond than tunnelling.
