Crimson Sign

Overview

Crimson Sign is one of the 12 variants of this shape in the game. What changes between them is the material, and with it the hardness, the drops, the durability and the recipe — so every figure on this page is this variant's own. Oak Sign is the same shape in a different material.

In Minecraft 1.21.4, Crimson Sign is a Nether block. A crafting table turns its ingredients into Crimson Sign. Its hardness of 1 makes it a normal, unhurried block to mine.

You can break it by hand without losing the drop. It drops as the same block you mined. Light passes through it, so it will not darken the space behind it.

It offers almost no protection from explosions (1 blast resistance). One slot holds 16 at most. It is crafted from Crimson Planks and Stick.

Nothing on the crafting grid is made from it.

About the crimson set

Crimson is not wood at all — it is fungus, harvested from the huge crimson fungi that grow on nylium in the crimson forest — and that biology gives the whole set its defining property: crimson blocks are completely fireproof. They will not burn, fire will not spread across them, and lava will not set them alight, which makes crimson and warped the only sensible building materials anywhere near lava or in the Nether generally. The set covers planks, stairs, slabs, fences, gates, doors, trapdoors, signs, hanging signs, buttons and pressure plates, but there is no crimson boat, because a stem is not a log. Crimson stems strip with an axe like a log and the planks are a deep maroon-red found nowhere else. Bone meal on crimson nylium grows a new huge fungus instantly, so the set is fully renewable from one nylium block.

How long it takes to break

Hardness 1 puts Crimson Sign at 1.5 seconds a block bare-handed, or 0.2 seconds with the right tool at netherite tier.

You are looking at 0.25 seconds on iron and 0.2 on diamond — the iron step is where the time actually falls.

No particular tool tier is required: any tool, or none at all, still yields the drop, so the table below is about speed rather than about whether you get anything.

Each Efficiency level adds level² + 1 to the tool's speed, so a level V tool clears this about 4 times faster than an unenchanted one.

Crimson Sign resists blasts at 1, which is not enough to survive anything explosive nearby. Light passes through it, and it emits none of its own. Stack size is 16. The block is tagged for axes, and only that class gets the speed bonus; everything else mines at bare-hand rate.
