Brewing is the one Minecraft system with no in-game recipe book. The brewing stand shows you three empty slots and tells you nothing, so almost everyone learns it by looking it up every single time. The structure is actually simple once you see it: a Water Bottle becomes an Awkward Potion with Nether Wart, the Awkward Potion becomes a real potion with one distinctive ingredient, and then up to three optional steps change what that potion does.

Those optional steps are where people get stuck. Redstone Dust makes a potion last longer. Glowstone Dust makes it stronger but shorter. You cannot have both — adding one replaces the other. Gunpowder turns it into a splash potion you can throw, and Dragon’s Breath turns a splash potion into a lingering cloud. A few potions are made by corrupting another finished potion with a Fermented Spider Eye, which is why Invisibility needs you to brew Night Vision first and then ruin it.

Choose a potion below and the planner lays out every step in order, with the exact ingredient, what comes out, how long it lasts, how many brewing operations it takes and how much Blaze Powder you need to fuel them.

Modifier

Redstone and Glowstone are mutually exclusive — the second one you add replaces the first.

Shopping list

  • Glass Bottle ×3
  • Blaze Powder ×1
  • Nether Wart ×1
  • Sugar ×1

One ingredient serves all three bottles in the stand, so brewing three at a time costs exactly the same as brewing one.

How this works

The shape of every brewing chain

  1. Water Bottle — right-click any water source with a Glass Bottle. Three at a time fills the stand.
  2. Awkward Potion — Water Bottle plus Nether Wart. It does nothing on its own; it is the carrier.
  3. The effect ingredient — one item that decides what the potion does. Sugar gives Speed, Magma Cream gives Fire Resistance, a Golden Carrot gives Night Vision, and so on.
  4. Redstone Dust or Glowstone Dust — longer, or stronger. Never both.
  5. Gunpowder — makes it a splash potion.
  6. Dragon’s Breath — makes a splash potion a lingering one.

Two potions break the pattern. Weakness skips Nether Wart entirely — Fermented Spider Eye straight onto a Water Bottle. And the corrupted potions (Harming, Slowness, Invisibility) are made by adding a Fermented Spider Eye to an already-finished potion, which is why the planner shows you an extra step for them.

Timing and fuel

Every brewing operation takes 20 seconds regardless of what is being brewed, and it processes all three bottom slots at once. One ingredient in the top slot serves all three bottles, so brewing three potions costs exactly the same in ingredients and time as brewing one. Always fill all three slots. One Blaze Powder fuels twenty operations.

A worked example: Splash Potion of Swiftness II

Water Bottle + Nether Wart gives an Awkward Potion. Awkward + Sugar gives a Potion of Swiftness lasting 3:00. Adding Glowstone Dust gives Swiftness II, which is faster but drops to 1:30. Adding Gunpowder makes it a splash potion, and a splash lands at three quarters of the drinkable duration — 1:30 × 0.75 = 1:07. That is four brewing operations, 80 seconds of stand time, and it produces three bottles.

Where we are less certain

Two things carry a caveat. First, the splash and lingering fractions: a splash potion applies three quarters of the drinkable duration to a target at the centre of the impact and less as distance increases, and a lingering cloud applies a quarter of the drinkable duration on each contact, with the cloud itself lasting around 30 seconds. The duration figure shown for splash and lingering potions is therefore a best case, not a guarantee. Second, the four potions added in 1.21 — Wind Charging, Weaving, Oozing and Infestation — are new enough that we have marked them medium confidence; as far as we can establish none of them accepts Redstone or Glowstone, so the planner offers neither. Everything else on this page is Java Edition 1.21 and unchanged for several versions.
