Overview
A Painting covers a wall with a piece of Minecraft's own art, and the size you get depends on the space you give it: place one against a large flat area and the game picks randomly from every painting that fits, so builders block out the exact area they want first and then place. Breaking a painting returns the item, so re-rolling costs nothing but patience — the usual technique is to wall in a 2×2 or 4×3 space, place repeatedly until the wanted picture appears, then remove the temporary blocks. Eight sticks and a wool of any colour is the recipe, which makes paintings one of the cheapest decorations in the game. 1.21 expanded the set considerably with new artwork, some of which appears only in loot chests rather than in the crafting recipe's random pool, so a decorator's collection is now partly an exploration project. Paintings can be placed on any solid wall, they do not need light, and mobs can knock them off, so keep them indoors where possible. A few well-placed pictures do more for an interior than another hundred blocks of detailing.

Tips

- Break and replace to re-roll the artwork — the item is always returned, so it costs nothing but time.
- A painting over a doorway hides an entrance completely and can be walked straight through.
