Overview
An Item Frame shows one item on a wall, floor or ceiling, and it is the single most useful decorative block in the game because it labels things. A frame above a chest holding one of whatever is inside turns a wall of identical chests into a readable storage room, and that one habit does more for a base than any sorting system. Frames also display maps: a map in a frame keeps updating and shows a green pointer at the frame's own location, which is how map walls are built. On the redstone side, a comparator behind a frame reads the rotation of the item inside — eight rotations give signal strengths 1 to 8 — which makes frames the classic hidden switch for a secret door. Crafting takes 8 sticks and a leather, and the Glow Item Frame variant adds a glow ink sac so the item inside is visible in the dark. Frames cannot be made invisible by any survival means: in Java Edition an invisible frame takes a command, which is one of the most common builder questions asked about them. Label the chests first, and everything else gets easier.
Labelling chests so a storage room can be read at a glance, displaying maps as a wall-mounted overview, and acting as a comparator-readable hidden switch in redstone.
In Minecraft, Item Frame is a decorative item. A full stack holds 64. It is crafted from Stick and Leather.
It goes into exactly one recipe: Glow Item Frame.
How to get it
Craft 1 from 8 Sticks and 1 Leather. Add a glow ink sac to make a Glow Item Frame, whose contents stay visible in complete darkness.
Tips
- One labelled frame per chest is the cheapest storage upgrade there is — cheaper than any sorting system.
- A comparator reads a frame's item rotation as signal 1 to 8, which makes a discreet redstone lock.
- Maps in frames keep updating and show a green marker where the frame is, which is how map walls work.
- Glow item frames keep their contents visible in the dark, which suits an unlit storage corridor.
Properties
One inventory slot holds 64, so a double chest holds 3,456.
