Overview
A Disc Fragment 5 is a broken piece of a music disc, and nine of them craft into Music Disc 5 — a track that is deliberately unsettling, full of distorted echoes, and matched to the place it comes from. Fragments generate only in ancient city loot chests, the same chests that hold echo shards and Swift Sneak books, so collecting a full set of nine usually means visiting more than one city or clearing a great many chests in a large one. That is the point: the disc is a reward for surviving the deep dark repeatedly, not for one lucky chest. Assembled and played in a jukebox, the track is the only piece of music in the game that fits the sculk aesthetic, and a jukebox playing it in a base built out of deepslate and sculk is a genuinely effective piece of atmosphere. Fragments stack to 64 and have no other use, so anything past nine is a spare for a second disc. Assembling all nine is a genuine achievement rather than a lucky drop, and the nine go anywhere in the grid — there is no shape to get wrong, only the count.
Crafting Music Disc 5, the deep dark's own track — the only disc assembled from pieces rather than found or dropped whole. Nine pieces, one track, one very dangerous city.
Disc Fragment is a music disc item in Minecraft 1.21.4. It stacks to 64. Chest loot in Ancient City can contain it.
The one thing it makes is Music Disc — 5.
How to get it
Loot ancient city chests, where fragments generate at roughly an 18% chance per chest. 9 fragments craft into 1 Music Disc 5, so expect to clear most of a city.
Tips
- Nine fragments make one disc, so a partial set is worth keeping rather than discarding.
- The same chests hold Echo Shards and Swift Sneak, so plan one thorough trip rather than three.
- Place wool under your feet while looting; it muffles the vibrations that summon the Warden.
- Fragments have no other use at all, so anything beyond nine is only useful for a second copy.
Version notes
Added in 1.19 with the deep dark, ancient cities and the Warden. It remains the only music disc in the game that must be crafted from fragments.
