Overview
Turtle eggs generate on beaches when a bred turtle returns to its home beach to lay, and they are the entire route to a turtle helmet — the only helmet in the game that grants a status effect, giving 10 seconds of Water Breathing every time you leave the water. Eggs come in clutches of 1 to 4 in a single block space, they only hatch at night, and they hatch faster on sand than on any other block. Baby turtles that hatch drop a scute when they grow into adults, and 5 scutes make the helmet. The hazards are specific and annoying. Any player or mob walking over an egg block crushes it — zombies, drowned, husks and zombie villagers actively seek eggs out to stamp on them — so a turtle farm needs a fence, a lit perimeter and, ideally, a block above the eggs that mobs cannot path onto. Silk Touch is the only way to collect eggs and move them, which is how players relocate a breeding beach next to their base rather than defending a wild one.

Turtle Egg is a building block in Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.4. It breaks almost instantly, with a hardness of just 0.5. You can break it by hand without losing the drop.
It is transparent, which matters when you are managing light levels. With a blast resistance of only 0.5 it will not survive an explosion. Sixty-four fit in one inventory slot.
No recipe takes it as an ingredient.
How to get it
Breed 2 turtles with seagrass and one will return to its home beach and lay 1 to 4 eggs. Collect eggs with a Silk Touch tool; they hatch only at night and fastest when laid on sand.
Tips
- Zombies and drowned deliberately seek out and trample turtle eggs, so fence and light the beach.
- Walking over an egg block breaks it; sneaking or a trapdoor above the eggs prevents that entirely.
- Silk Touch collects eggs, which lets you move a breeding beach next to your base.
- Eggs hatch only at night and hatch fastest on sand, so build the farm on the block they were laid on.
Properties
