Overview
The dragon egg is the rarest block in Minecraft and the purest trophy: exactly one generates per world, on top of the exit portal after the ender dragon is killed for the first time, and dragons resummoned with end crystals afterwards never drop another. It has no crafting use, no mechanical function and no recipe — it exists to prove you beat the game. Collecting it is the puzzle. Clicking or punching the egg teleports it up to a few blocks away in a random direction rather than breaking it, which is the mechanic that catches every first-time dragon slayer, and it obeys gravity, so a badly aimed teleport drops it into the void. The two working methods are to push it with a piston, which breaks it into a collectable item, or to teleport it over a hole with a torch at the bottom so it falls, lands on the torch and breaks. It emits light level 1 and produces small purple particles, which is enough to make it look alive on a pedestal. Most players end up displaying it on an obsidian pedestal in the most secure room they own.
Nothing mechanical — it is a trophy. Its only functions are emitting light level 1, producing purple particles, and proving that the dragon was killed in that world.
In Minecraft 1.21.4, Dragon Egg is an End block. There is no way to craft it; you have to find it and mine it. Its hardness of 3 makes it a normal, unhurried block to mine.
Mining it returns the block itself, so it is safe to relocate. Light level 1 is decorative rather than functional — mobs can still spawn beside it. Light passes through it, so it will not darken the space behind it.
