Overview
Suspicious gravel is the gravel-textured half of archaeology, and it exists in exactly two places: trail ruins and cold ocean ruins. Like suspicious sand it is excavated with a brush rather than a shovel — hold the use key for a couple of seconds and the buried item works its way out — and like suspicious sand, hitting it with any other tool destroys the block and loses whatever was inside. What separates it is the loot. Trail ruins are the only place several pottery sherds and all of the ordinary armour trim templates generate, which makes suspicious gravel the source of most of the trim patterns a player will ever own, and it also yields wooden hoes, blue and white dye, and unusual coloured candles. Cold ocean ruins carry a different, smaller list. It also obeys gravel physics, falling when unsupported and losing its contents when it does. Because trail ruins are partially buried and spread over a wide area, finding the suspicious gravel is often more work than brushing it, and a brush lasts 64 uses. Bring more than one brush if you plan to clear a whole site.
Armour trim templates, which mostly come from trail ruins, plus pottery sherds, dyes and candles. It is the main source of the decorative trim patterns a smithing table applies.
Suspicious Gravel counts as a naturally generated block in Minecraft 1.21.4. With a hardness of 0.25 it gives way immediately under almost any tool. Any tool works, and so do bare hands.
It offers almost no protection from explosions (0.25 blast resistance). A full stack holds 64. It is not used in any crafting recipe.
How to get it
Brush it with a brush made from 1 feather, 1 copper ingot and 1 stick. It generates only in trail ruins and cold ocean ruins, and a single trail ruin holds dozens of blocks spread across its footprint.
Tips
- Trail ruins are the main source of ordinary armour trim templates — brush every block you find there.
- Any tool other than a brush destroys the block and its contents, exactly as with suspicious sand.
- It falls if unsupported and loses the item, so dig around it and never underneath it.
- Trail ruins are largely buried, so clear the topsoil across the footprint before brushing anything.
Version notes
Suspicious gravel and trail ruins were added in 1.20 (Trails & Tales) and are unchanged in 1.21.4.
How long it takes to break
At a hardness of 0.25, Suspicious Gravel takes 0.4 seconds to punch out and 0.05 seconds with a netherite-tier tool of the correct class.
Iron manages 0.1 seconds and diamond 0.05, which makes diamond the tier that changes how this block feels.
Nothing here needs a minimum tier: whatever you swing, the block still drops, and the only difference is how long it takes.
Efficiency adds its level squared plus one to the tool speed. On a block this soft the enchantment reaches instant mining almost immediately.
| Tool | No enchantment | Efficiency III | Efficiency V |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hand | 0.4 s | 0.4 s | 0.4 s |
| Wooden | 0.2 s | instant | instant |
| Stone | 0.1 s | instant | instant |
| Iron | 0.1 s | instant | instant |
| Diamond | instant | instant | instant |
| Netherite | instant | instant | instant |
| Golden | instant | instant | instant |
Properties
Suspicious Gravel resists blasts at 0.25, which is not enough to survive anything explosive nearby. Light does not pass through it, and it emits none of its own. Stack size is 64 — the standard full stack. It does not renew, so the world's supply is fixed. The block is tagged for shovels, and only that class gets the speed bonus; everything else mines at bare-hand rate.
