Gravel

Overview

Gravel is the falling grey block that generates in ocean floors, riverbeds, caves, windswept gravelly hills and throughout the Nether, and it exists in a player's life for one reason: flint. Break a gravel block and there is roughly a 10 percent chance of flint instead of gravel, and Fortune raises that sharply — Fortune III makes flint a guaranteed drop, which turns a shovel and a gravel hillside into a stack of flint in a few minutes. Flint is what makes flint and steel, arrows and the fletching table trade chain work. Gravel is also a gravity block, which is both its hazard and its use: mining upward into a gravel pocket drops the whole column onto your head and can suffocate you in seconds, but that same behaviour makes gravel the standard material for a self-filling shaft or a trapdoor-triggered drop. Place a torch under a falling gravel column and the block breaks into an item instead of stacking, which is the classic technique for clearing a gravel-choked tunnel quickly. It is also half of every concrete powder recipe, alongside sand and a dye, which means a large concrete build needs as much gravel as it does sand.

Flint for flint and steel and arrows, concrete powder alongside sand and dye, coarse dirt when combined with dirt, and gravity-driven traps and self-filling shafts.

Minecraft classifies Gravel as a naturally generated block. It has no crafting recipe — you collect it by mining it where it generates. A hardness of 0.6 means it is one of the quicker blocks to clear.

No specific tool is required to collect it. Broken correctly, it drops itself. It offers almost no protection from explosions (0.6 blast resistance).

A full stack holds 64. It is an ingredient in 17 recipes, among them Black Concrete Powder, Blue Concrete Powder, Brown Concrete Powder and 14 more.

How to get it

Dig it with a shovel from riverbeds, ocean floors, caves and the Nether. About 10 percent of blocks drop flint instead of gravel, and a Fortune III shovel makes that drop guaranteed.

Tips

Fortune III on a shovel turns every gravel block into flint, which is a tenfold improvement on the base rate.
Never dig upward into gravel — a falling column suffocates you in about 2 seconds if you cannot escape.
Place a torch under falling gravel and each block breaks into an item rather than stacking up.
4 gravel and 4 sand with 1 dye give 8 concrete powder, so gravel is half of every concrete build.

How long it takes to break

Gravel has a hardness of 0.6. By hand that is 0.9 seconds per block; with the correct tool at netherite tier it is 0.1 seconds.

No particular tool tier is required: any tool, or none at all, still yields the drop, so the table below is about speed rather than about whether you get anything.

Each Efficiency level adds level² + 1 to the tool's speed, so a level V tool clears this about 2 times faster than an unenchanted one.

Properties

With 0.6 blast resistance Gravel goes down to any nearby explosion. It is fully opaque and produces no light. Stack size is 64 — the standard full stack. It renews, so a single world will never run out. The fastest tool for it is a shovel; any other kind of tool mines it no faster than a bare hand does, because the speed bonus only applies to the tool class the block is tagged for.
