Overview
A magma block deals fire damage to anything standing on it — one point every half second, ignoring armour but not Fire Resistance — and it does not need to be lit, does not burn out and never spreads. That makes it the standard floor for a mob grinder, the cheapest permanent trap block, and a serious hazard on the floor of a Nether cavern where it blends into the terrain. Underwater it does something else entirely: it creates a downward bubble column, dragging players, mobs and items to the bottom, which is the exact inverse of soul sand and the mechanism behind drowning traps and item collection floors. It also emits light level 3, which is not enough to stop mob spawns but is enough to see by. Sneaking on a magma block prevents the damage, which is worth remembering when crossing one. Magma blocks generate in the Nether around lava, in the deep ocean floor and in dripstone caves, and they can be crafted from four magma cream, which comes from the magma cubes you will meet in basalt deltas anyway.
Killing mobs in a farm without redstone, creating downward bubble columns to pull items and mobs underwater, and providing a permanent hazard block that never burns out.
Minecraft classifies Magma Block as a Nether block. A crafting table turns its ingredients into Magma Block. It breaks almost instantly, with a hardness of just 0.5.
Anything below a wooden pickaxe breaks it without leaving a drop. It drops as the same block you mined. It gives off a dim light level 3, enough to see by but not to stop mobs spawning.
It offers almost no protection from explosions (0.5 blast resistance). A full stack holds 64. It is crafted from Magma Cream.
Nothing on the crafting grid is made from it.
How to get it
Mine it with any pickaxe in the Nether, on deep ocean floors and in underwater caves, or craft it from 4 magma cream. Standing on one deals 1 damage every half second unless you sneak.
Tips
- Sneak to cross a magma block without taking damage — it is the only way short of Fire Resistance.
- Underwater it pulls everything down, which makes it the collection floor of most drowned and guardian farms.
- It gives light level 3, enough to see but not enough to prevent mobs spawning around it.
- 4 magma cream craft 1 block, so a basalt delta trip with a sword supplies a whole farm floor.
How long it takes to break
Magma Block has a hardness of 0.5. By hand that is 2.5 seconds per block; with the correct tool at netherite tier it is 0.1 seconds.
You are looking at 0.15 seconds on iron and 0.1 on diamond — the diamond step is where the time actually falls.
Below wooden the block breaks and simply vanishes. Bring the right tier or leave it in the ground.
Efficiency contributes its level squared plus one to tool speed, which makes Efficiency V roughly 2 times faster than the plain tool.

Properties
Magma Block resists blasts at 0.5, which is not enough to survive anything explosive nearby. Light does not pass through it, and it emits at level 3. A single slot takes 64, the usual full stack. Being non-renewable, every one in the world is finite. A pickaxe is the fastest choice here. A tool of the wrong class is no better than your fist — the speed bonus is tied to the block's own tool tag.
