Overview

Ice is frozen water, and it is the only common building block in the game that can disappear on its own. Placed anywhere with a light level of 12 or higher from a block source, it melts back into water, which is why an ice floor lit with torches turns into a swimming pool overnight and why packed ice exists as the stable alternative. It is slippery, so a player or mob moving across it slides and takes longer to stop, and a boat placed on ice travels several times faster than one in water — which is the basis of every ice road in the game. Broken without Silk Touch it turns into a water source block rather than dropping anything, so collecting it requires the enchantment. That water-source behaviour is genuinely useful: an ice block placed in a hole and broken gives you water without a bucket, which is a common trick for a farm in a biome where water would otherwise freeze. Ice generates on the surface of frozen rivers, frozen oceans and any water in a cold biome, and nine blocks craft into one packed ice.

Fast boat travel, a water source you can place without a bucket, and the base material for packed ice and blue ice — 9 ice make 1 packed ice, and 9 of those make 1 blue ice.

Ice counts as a naturally generated block in Minecraft 1.21.4. A hardness of 0.5 means it is one of the quicker blocks to clear. No specific tool is required to collect it.

Light passes through it, so it will not darken the space behind it. It offers almost no protection from explosions (0.5 blast resistance). A full stack holds 64.

Its only crafting use is Packed Ice.

How to get it

Mine it with a Silk Touch pickaxe on any frozen water surface in a cold biome. Without Silk Touch it becomes a water source instead. It melts if the light level from a nearby block reaches 12.

Tips

  • Keep torches away from an ice build: light level 12 from a block source melts it back into water.
  • Break an ice block over a hole to create a water source without carrying a bucket.
  • A boat on ice is several times faster than a boat on water and costs nothing to maintain.
  • Silk Touch is the only way to collect ice; every other tool leaves you with a puddle.

How long it takes to break

Ice has a hardness of 0.5. By hand that is 0.75 seconds per block; with the correct tool at netherite tier it is 0.1 seconds.

You are looking at 0.15 seconds on iron and 0.1 on diamond — the diamond step is where the time actually falls.

Nothing here needs a minimum tier: whatever you swing, the block still drops, and the only difference is how long it takes.

Efficiency adds its level squared plus one to the tool speed, so Efficiency V is about 2 times faster than the same tool unenchanted.

Properties

Blast resistance on Ice is 0.5, so any explosion nearby takes it out. It lets light pass and gives off no light. A single slot takes 64, the usual full stack. Being renewable, it can be produced indefinitely in one world. A pickaxe is fastest here; any other class mines it at bare-hand speed, because the bonus only applies to the class the block is tagged for.

Frequently asked questions

How do you get Ice in Minecraft?

Ice generates naturally in the world and does not drop anything without Silk Touch.

What tool do you need to break Ice?

No specific tool is required — Ice can be broken by hand.

Is Ice blast resistant?

Ice has a blast resistance of 0.5, so an explosion nearby will destroy it.

How many Ice fit in one stack?

Ice stacks to 64, so a single double chest holds 3,456 of them.

Is Ice renewable?

Yes. Ice can be obtained again and again in one world, so building with it does not exhaust the supply.

How long does Ice take to break?

About 0.1 seconds if you bring the correct netherite tool; 0.75 seconds with your fists.
