Overview
Small end islands is the biome that fills the enormous gap between the End's central island and its outer ring: a scatter of tiny end stone islands, most only a few blocks across, hanging in the void with hundreds of blocks of nothing between them. Nothing generates on them — no chorus plants worth harvesting, no end cities, no structures of any kind — and the only mob is the enderman, which spawns in the End at a far higher rate than in the Overworld. The biome matters for one reason: it is what you cross. An end gateway drops you into this region, and getting from there to the end highlands where the cities are is either an elytra flight or a very careful ender pearl chain. That makes small end islands the most dangerous place in the End despite having almost nothing in it, because a mistake here is a fall into the void, which is unsurvivable and takes your inventory with it. Wear a carved pumpkin so an enderman does not teleport in and shove you, and never bridge without something solid to stand on. It borders end barrens where the outer islands begin.
Nothing generates here to gather except end stone. Its purpose is navigational: it is the 1,000-block crossing between the central island and the end cities on the outer ring.
Small End Islands sits in the temperate band of Minecraft's biome table, generating in the End at a base temperature of 0.5.
Small End Islands is in the The End, where there is no weather at all — no rain, no snow, no thunder, and no day-night cycle to go with it.
Nothing spawns naturally in Small End Islands. That is the biome's defining property rather than a gap in the data — it is the only place in the Overworld where the darkness is genuinely empty, and it is what makes the sculk sensors and shriekers here the real threat.
End biomes are floating islands of end stone over the void. The central island holds the dragon and the exit portal; the outer islands, reached by an end gateway, hold end cities, shulkers, chorus fruit and the only elytra in the game.
How to get it
Throw an ender pearl through an end gateway after killing the dragon; the gateway teleports you roughly 1,000 blocks outward into this region, from where the outer islands are another few hundred blocks away.
Tips
- Wear a carved pumpkin the entire time — an enderman knocking you off a 5-block island over void is how most End trips end.
- Never fly without at least 16 spare firework rockets and a backup elytra in an ender chest at the gateway.
- Bridge with end stone rather than gravel or sand; a falling block over the void is gone and so is your route.
- Set your spawn before you leave: dying over void here returns you to your bed with none of your gear recoverable.
Climate and generation
Small End Islands has a base temperature of 0.5, which puts it in the temperate band. Temperature is not a thermometer reading — it is the single number that decides snow versus rain, whether water freezes over, and what colour the grass renders.
Above 0.15 water stays liquid and any precipitation falls as rain.
| Property | Value | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Temperature | 0.5 | Decides whether rain falls as snow, whether water freezes, and the grass and foliage tint. |
| Precipitation | No | Nothing falls here, so a cauldron has to be filled by hand. |
| Dimension | The End | Sets which mobs, structures and ores can generate at all. |
| Grass and water tint | #000000 | The colour the game applies to grass, leaves and water in this biome. |
