Overview

End barrens is the outermost fringe of the End's outer islands: bare end stone, no chorus plants, no structures, and a sheer drop into the void on every side. It generates as the rim around the larger outer islands, where the terrain thins out from the tall highlands into small flat shelves and finally into nothing. There is no reason to farm here and nothing to gather except end stone itself, but the biome matters for navigation, because it is what you cross on the way in and what you fall off on the way out. Endermen spawn on it as they do everywhere in the End, at a much higher rate than in the Overworld, and an enderman on a 12-block-wide shelf with void on both sides is a genuine hazard — look at one by accident and it will teleport to you and shove you off the edge. Carved pumpkins on the head stop them noticing your gaze entirely, which is why they are standard End kit. End barrens borders end midlands and end highlands, and between islands there is only void, so an elytra or a long ender pearl chain is the only way across.

End stone in bulk, which is blast-resistant and immune to enderman block-stealing, and a safe approach line to the end cities on the highlands next door.

End Barrens sits in the temperate band of Minecraft's biome table, generating in the End at a base temperature of 0.5.

End Barrens is in the The End, where there is no weather at all — no rain, no snow, no thunder, and no day-night cycle to go with it.

Nothing spawns naturally in End Barrens. That is the biome's defining property rather than a gap in the data — it is the only place in the Overworld where the darkness is genuinely empty, and it is what makes the sculk sensors and shriekers here the real threat.

End biomes are floating islands of end stone over the void. The central island holds the dragon and the exit portal; the outer islands, reached by an end gateway, hold end cities, shulkers, chorus fruit and the only elytra in the game.

How to get it

Reach the outer End islands by throwing an ender pearl through an end gateway, which appears after the dragon dies. The outer islands begin roughly 1,000 blocks from the central island.

Tips

  • Wear a carved pumpkin: it blocks the enderman aggro-on-gaze mechanic completely and costs you only screen edges.
  • Bridge with end stone rather than sand or gravel — falling blocks over void are lost and end stone is free here.
  • Keep at least 8 ender pearls in reserve; if an elytra flight goes wrong over void, a pearl is the only recovery.
  • Water thrown from a bucket does not place in the End, so bring blocks and a fire-resistance plan instead of the usual water trick.

Climate and generation

End Barrens has a base temperature of 0.5, which puts it in the temperate band. Temperature is not a thermometer reading — it is the single number that decides snow versus rain, whether water freezes over, and what colour the grass renders.

Above 0.15 water stays liquid and any precipitation falls as rain.

Mobs in End Barrens

No mob spawns naturally in End Barrens. Hostile mobs cannot generate here at all, which means the only things you will meet are what wandered in from a neighbouring biome or what a spawner produces.
