Overview
If you have ever loaded a very old world and found deserts bordering tundra with no transition, this is the release that fixed it. The Update that Changed the World, shipped as 1.7.2, rewrote biome generation so that temperature zones cluster: hot biomes sit beside hot biomes, cold beside cold, and the map reads as a coherent landscape rather than a patchwork. That single change is why worlds created before and after October 2013 look nothing alike, and why so much pre-1.7 terrain has that distinctive jumbled quality. On top of the rewrite came about a dozen new biomes — mesa, roofed forest, savanna, ice spikes, mega taiga and more — with acacia and dark oak as new tree types carrying their own full wood sets. Stained Glass gave builders their first translucent colour, sixteen ways, which is still one of the most-used decorative blocks in the game. Podzol, red sand and packed ice arrived as biome-specific materials. Fishing was overhauled from an idle click into a real activity with treasure and junk categories and enchantable rods, which made enchanted books, name tags and saddles things you could pull out of a lake.
Coherent biome placement, which is why modern worlds look the way they do, plus a dozen new biomes, acacia and dark oak wood sets, stained glass in sixteen colours, podzol, red sand, packed ice, and fishing worth doing for treasure.
This update rewrote biome generation, which is why worlds created before and after it look completely different. Temperature-based biome clustering meant deserts stopped bordering tundra, and a dozen new biomes filled the map out. Stained glass gave builders their first translucent colour, and the fishing rework turned an idle activity into a viable source of enchanted books.
How to get it
Java Edition 1.7.2 was released on 25 October 2013, with 1.7.10 becoming the long-lived modded target for years afterward. If you are installing a modpack from before 2017 there is a good chance 1.7.10 is the version it needs.
Tips
- Worlds created before 1.7.2 keep their old biome layout in generated chunks, so the seam at the border is permanent.
- Stained glass drops nothing when broken without Silk Touch, unlike most glass — plan placements before committing.
- Enchantable rods with Luck of the Sea and Lure date from here, which is what turned fishing into a real source of enchanted books.
- Dark oak only grows from a 2 by 2 arrangement of saplings, so a single dark oak sapling will never produce a tree.

Frequently asked questions
Why do old worlds have strange biome borders?
Because 1.7.2 rewrote biome placement to cluster by temperature. Chunks generated before the update keep the old layout, and the difference at the border is usually obvious.
What is 1.7.10 and why does it come up so often?
It is the final point release of this branch and was the dominant modded version for years. A great many older modpacks target it specifically.
Did fishing change in this update?
Substantially. Catches were split into fish, treasure and junk categories, and rods became enchantable, which made fishing a viable source of enchanted books and name tags.
