Overview
Podzol is the dark brown forest floor of old growth taiga and bamboo jungle, and it does two useful things. Mushrooms planted on it survive and grow at any light level, including full daylight, which makes podzol and mycelium the only two blocks an outdoor mushroom farm can be built on — and podzol is by far the easier of the two to reach, since a taiga is a short walk in most worlds while a mushroom island is an ocean voyage. Second, grass will not spread onto it and it will not turn into grass, so a podzol path or clearing stays exactly as you laid it, which makes it the tidiest natural-looking ground cover in the game for a forest build. It also supports every plant grass does, including saplings and flowers. Mined without Silk Touch it drops plain dirt, so a trip for it means bringing the enchantment. There is one other route: bone meal used on the coarse-dirt-like ground under a large spruce tree grown from 4 saplings converts nearby blocks to podzol. That makes it the one ground cover that needs no maintenance at all.

Podzol is a naturally generated block in Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.4. There is no way to craft it; you have to find it and mine it. It breaks almost instantly, with a hardness of just 0.5.
You can break it by hand without losing the drop. Breaking it produces Dirt. With a blast resistance of only 0.5 it will not survive an explosion.
Sixty-four fit in one inventory slot. No recipe takes it as an ingredient.
How to get it
Mine it with a Silk Touch shovel in old growth pine or spruce taiga, or in bamboo jungle. Without Silk Touch it drops dirt. Growing a 2x2 giant spruce from 4 saplings also generates podzol around its base.

- Silk Touch is required to collect it; every other tool drops plain dirt instead.

How long it takes to break
Hardness 0.5 puts Podzol at 0.75 seconds a block bare-handed, or 0.1 seconds with the right tool at netherite tier.
Iron takes 0.15 seconds against diamond's 0.1, so the upgrade worth making for this block is the one to diamond.
Nothing here needs a minimum tier: whatever you swing, the block still drops, and the only difference is how long it takes.
Efficiency adds its level squared plus one to the tool speed, so Efficiency V is about 2 times faster than the same tool unenchanted.

Properties
Podzol has a blast resistance of 0.5, so any explosion nearby destroys it. It blocks light completely and emits no light of its own. One inventory slot holds 64, the normal full stack. It is renewable, so a single world can supply an unlimited amount of it. A shovel is the fastest choice here. A tool of the wrong class is no better than your fist — the speed bonus is tied to the block's own tool tag. Broken normally it drops Dirt rather than itself; Silk Touch is what returns the block, and Fortune raises the ordinary drop instead.
