Overview
Mycelium is the purple-flecked ground cover of mushroom fields, and it has one rule that makes it worth carrying home: hostile mobs cannot spawn on it at any light level. That is not a light mechanic — it is a property of the block itself, so a platform of mycelium is permanently safe without a single torch, which is why players who find a mushroom island bring stacks of it back for a base floor or a farm roof. It also grows mushrooms at any light level, unlike grass or dirt, which makes it and podzol the two blocks a surface mushroom farm can be built on. Mycelium spreads to adjacent dirt blocks in adequate light exactly as grass does, and the two compete: a grass block beside mycelium may be converted, and vice versa. Mined without Silk Touch it drops plain dirt, so collecting it requires the enchantment. Placing a mycelium block also turns the particles above it into the faint drifting spores that make mushroom fields look the way they do. It also cannot be tilled into farmland, so a mycelium platform stays exactly as you laid it.

How to get it
Mine it with a Silk Touch shovel in mushroom fields, which generate as rare islands surrounded by deep ocean, often more than 2,000 blocks from land. Without Silk Touch it drops plain dirt.

Blast resistance on Mycelium is 0.6, so any explosion nearby takes it out. It stops light entirely and gives off no light. Stack size is 64 — the standard full stack. It renews, so a single world will never run out. A shovel is the fastest choice here. A tool of the wrong class is no better than your fist — the speed bonus is tied to the block's own tool tag. Broken normally it drops Dirt rather than itself; Silk Touch is what returns the block, and Fortune raises the ordinary drop instead.
