Overview

Multishot fires three bolts from a single arrow, spread in a shallow fan, and every one of them can hit. Against a single distant target that spread is a drawback; against a crowd walking towards you it is the reason a crossbow feels so much stronger than a bow in a raid. Fire into a pillager wave and three arrows land in three different bodies for the price of one, which is a rate of return no other ranged weapon offers. The economics are better than they first look because of what it does to special ammunition: a single firework rocket loaded into a Multishot crossbow becomes three explosions, and a single tipped arrow becomes three doses of the effect. A Multishot crossbow loaded with fireworks is the standard raid-clearing tool for a reason. The costs are real too. Only the centre arrow can be picked up again, so ordinary arrows are consumed at triple rate, and it takes more durability per shot than a normal firing. It conflicts with Piercing, which is the genuine decision: three arrows that spread, or one that goes through everything in a line.

Crowd control at range — raids, pillager outposts and any corridor of mobs — and tripling the effect of a single firework rocket or tipped arrow.

Fires three arrows at once for the cost of one. It conflicts with Piercing, and only the centre arrow can be picked back up.

Multishot caps at I — one level, with nothing above it. Being a standard enchantment, an enchanting table can produce it directly.

At weight 2 it takes up about 9% of the offer pool for an item that accepts it; the larger that share, the less rerolling a level-30 table costs you.

How to get it

Enchant a Crossbow at a table with 15 bookshelves, or apply a book; there is only 1 level. Weight 2 makes it an uncommon roll, and it conflicts with Piercing on the same crossbow.

Tips

  • Load a Firework Rocket and one shot becomes three explosions; this is the standard raid weapon.
  • Only the middle arrow is recoverable, so ordinary arrows are spent three times as fast.
  • It conflicts with Piercing — spread against a crowd, or penetration down a line.
  • A tipped arrow fired from it applies its effect three times, which makes Harming and Slowness far cheaper per bottle.

What each level does

Multishot has one level, so there is nothing to upgrade — a second book of it on an anvil adds nothing but cost.

Multishot has a single level.

Properties

The enchanting table can roll it, and librarians sell it as a book — breaking and replacing a lectern rerolls the trade until one does.

What it can be applied to

Multishot can be applied to Crossbow.

Incompatible enchantments

Multishot cannot share an item with Piercing.

The anvil does not warn you. It leaves the conflicting enchantment off, keeps the cost, and hands the item back, so plan the order before you spend the book.

How to get it

Enchanting table or an enchanted book.

At a table with fifteen bookshelves the level-30 slot is where it appears; below level 30 the offer pool is smaller and the levels lower, which is why the bookshelf ring is worth building before you enchant anything you care about.

Command

With cheats enabled the first line puts Multishot I on the held item, and the second gives you one that is already enchanted. From 1.20.5 onward the item syntax uses the "enchantments" component.

Apply it

/enchant @s minecraft:multishot 1

Give an enchanted item

/give @s crossbow[enchantments={levels:{"minecraft:multishot":1}}]
