Overview
Lure shortens the wait for a bite, and it does so by a meaningful margin — each level trims roughly five seconds off the average, so a fully enchanted rod bites in a small fraction of the time an ordinary one takes. For anyone farming fish for food, feeding cats and ocelots, or grinding through casts for volume, it is the difference between fishing being a pastime and fishing being a job. It also makes an AFK fish farm worth building at all, since the cast rate is what sets the throughput. What it does not do is improve what you catch. Lure works on the timer only, and it slightly worsens the treasure ratio into the bargain, which is why the standard advice is to think about what the rod is for before enchanting it. A food and volume rod takes Lure III. A treasure rod aimed at Mending books takes Luck of the Sea III alone. A general-purpose rod takes both and accepts the compromise, which is what most players end up with. Rain speeds up bites independently of the enchantment, so a storm is the best time to fish either way.
Volume fishing — food, bone meal from junk, and feeding tamed cats — where the number of casts per minute is what limits you rather than what each cast produces.
Reduces the wait between bites. It speeds fishing up considerably but slightly lowers the treasure rate, so pair it with Luck of the Sea.
The highest level of Lure is III. It is standard, so it sits in the enchanting table's own offer pool.
It carries a weight of 2, which is roughly 22% of everything a table can roll for gear that takes it — so that is about how often you should expect to see it.
How to get it
Enchant a Fishing Rod at a table with 15 bookshelves, or combine 2 level II books on an anvil for level III. Weight 2 makes it an uncommon offer, and level III cuts about 15 seconds from the average wait.
Tips
- Rain shortens the wait on its own, so fishing during a storm compounds with the enchantment.
- It slightly worsens the treasure odds, which matters only if the rod is meant for Luck of the Sea work.
- Build the rod around its job: volume takes Lure III, treasure takes Luck of the Sea III, general use takes both.
- Fishing gives experience per catch, which makes a Mending rod effectively self-repairing.
What each level does
Level by level, this is what you get. Most of the gain is in reaching III, and two II books on an anvil make one III.
Lure III cuts the average wait by about 15 seconds.
| Level | Effect |
|---|---|
| I | wait time 5 seconds shorter |
| II | wait time 10 seconds shorter |
| III | wait time 15 seconds shorter |
Properties
An enchanting table can offer it directly, and a librarian villager will sell it as a book — rerolling a librarian's trade by breaking and replacing their lectern is the cheapest route to it.

How to get it
Enchanting table or an enchanted book.
At a table with fifteen bookshelves the level-30 slot is where it appears; below level 30 the offer pool is smaller and the levels lower, which is why the bookshelf ring is worth building before you enchant anything you care about.
Command
With cheats enabled the first line puts Lure III on the held item, and the second gives you one that is already enchanted. From 1.20.5 onward the item syntax uses the "enchantments" component.
