Moss Block

Overview

A moss block is the green carpet of lush caves and the fastest terraforming tool in the game. Use bone meal on a placed moss block and it converts the stone, dirt, deepslate, gravel and rooted dirt around it into more moss, spreading in a patch and sprouting grass, flowers, azalea bushes and moss carpet on top as it goes. That means turning a bare stone cave into a green room is a matter of a few moss blocks and a stack of bone meal rather than hours of block placing, which is why moss is the standard first purchase from a wandering trader for anyone building underground. It is also soft: a hoe breaks it instantly, and it can be crafted into moss carpet at 3 blocks for 3 carpets. Moss blocks generate in lush caves alongside the azalea, glow berries and dripleaf, and they are sold by wandering traders, which is often the easier route. Combining moss with any of the blocks it converts in a crafting grid does nothing — the spread only happens through bone meal in the world.

Converting bare stone and dirt into greenery in seconds, softening the look of an underground base, and producing moss carpet, azalea bushes and flowers as a by-product of the spread.

In Minecraft 1.21.4, Moss Block is a plant block. There is no way to craft it; you have to find it and mine it. It breaks almost instantly, with a hardness of just 0.1.

You can break it by hand without losing the drop. It drops as the same block you mined. With a blast resistance of only 0.1 it will not survive an explosion.

Sixty-four fit in one inventory slot. Its crafting uses are Moss Carpet, Mossy Cobblestone, and Mossy Stone Bricks.

How to get it

Collect it with a hoe from lush caves, which sit under surface azalea trees, or buy it from a wandering trader. 1 bone meal on a placed moss block converts the surrounding stone and dirt into more moss.

Tips

Bone meal a placed moss block and it converts everything nearby — this is far faster than placing blocks by hand.
A hoe is the fastest tool for moss and it always drops itself, so no enchantment is needed.
Wandering traders sell moss blocks, which saves finding a lush cave in the first place.

How long it takes to break

Moss Block has a hardness of 0.1. By hand that is 0.15 seconds per block; with the correct tool at netherite tier it is 0.05 seconds.

No particular tool tier is required: any tool, or none at all, still yields the drop, so the table below is about speed rather than about whether you get anything.

The Efficiency formula is level² + 1 added to tool speed, which on a block this soft tips over into instant mining very early.

Properties

With 0.1 blast resistance Moss Block goes down to any nearby explosion. It is fully opaque and produces no light. 64 fit in a slot — a full stack. It is renewable, so one world can supply as much of it as you want. A hoe is fastest here; any other class mines it at bare-hand speed, because the bonus only applies to the class the block is tagged for.
