Overview
Melon counts as a plant block in Minecraft 1.21.4. Melon has a crafting recipe, so it is renewable as long as you can source its ingredients. At a hardness of 1 it takes a moment to break but never slows a build down.
Any tool works, and so do bare hands. What you actually collect is Melon Slice. A blast resistance of 1 means a single creeper will clear it away.
It stacks to 64. You make it with Melon Slice. No recipe takes it as an ingredient.
How long it takes to break
At a hardness of 1, Melon takes 1.5 seconds to punch out and 0.2 seconds with a netherite-tier tool of the correct class.
An iron tool takes 0.25 seconds and a diamond one 0.2, so the jump that actually matters for this block is the one to iron.
Nothing here needs a minimum tier: whatever you swing, the block still drops, and the only difference is how long it takes.
Each Efficiency level adds level² + 1 to the tool's speed, so a level V tool clears this about 4 times faster than an unenchanted one.
| Tool | No enchantment | Efficiency III | Efficiency V |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hand | 1.5 s | 1.5 s | 1.5 s |
| Wooden | 0.75 s | 0.15 s | 0.1 s |
| Stone | 0.4 s | 0.15 s | instant |
| Iron | 0.25 s | 0.1 s | instant |
| Diamond | 0.2 s | 0.1 s | instant |
| Netherite | 0.2 s | 0.1 s | instant |
| Golden | 0.15 s | 0.1 s | instant |
Properties
Blast resistance on Melon is 1, so any explosion nearby takes it out. It stops light entirely and gives off no light. A single slot takes 64, the usual full stack. Being renewable, it can be produced indefinitely in one world. An axe is the fastest choice here. A tool of the wrong class is no better than your fist — the speed bonus is tied to the block's own tool tag. Broken normally it drops Melon Slice rather than itself; Silk Touch is what returns the block, and Fortune raises the ordinary drop instead.
