Overview
Bedrock is the indestructible floor of the world. It fills the bottom five layers of the Overworld, from Y -64 upward in an irregular pattern that thins out as it rises, so Y -64 is solid bedrock, Y -63 is mostly bedrock, and by Y -59 there is enough stone to mine in. It also forms the Nether's floor at Y 0 and its ceiling at Y 128, and the platform the End portal deposits you on. Its blast resistance is effectively infinite and its hardness is -1, which in Minecraft's terms means no tool can ever break it in survival; the block cannot be obtained legitimately in Java Edition at all. The practical consequences are all about mining. The classic advice to dig at the very bottom of the world is wrong precisely because of bedrock — Y -59 is the standard diamond mining level not because the ore peaks there but because bedrock eats most of the layers below it. In the Nether the bedrock ceiling at Y 128 is why the flat, mob-free "nether roof" exists as a travel surface, though it is officially unsupported terrain.
Nothing you build — it is the world's boundary. Its practical relevance is knowing where it stops: Y -59 is the lowest layer worth strip mining, because bedrock fills most of what is below it.
Bedrock counts as a technical block in Minecraft 1.21.4. It cannot be obtained in Survival — it exists for Creative mode and commands. It is indestructible outside of Creative mode.
At 3,600,000 blast resistance it is a genuinely blast-proof building material. It is not used in any crafting recipe.
How to get it
Bedrock cannot be mined, crafted or obtained in survival Java Edition. It generates in the bottom 5 layers of the Overworld from Y -64, as the Nether's floor at Y 0 and ceiling at Y 128, and on the End's arrival platform.
Tips
- Strip mine at Y -59, not Y -64: bedrock fills the bottom layers and there is simply less stone to find ore in.
- In the Nether the bedrock ceiling sits at Y 128, which is what creates the flat roof travel surface above it.
- Never dig straight down near bedrock level; lava pools at around Y -54 and the fall onto it is fatal.
- A block that will not break with a netherite pickaxe and Efficiency V is bedrock — there is no trick or tool that works.
