Overview
A Book and Quill is the only way to write in Minecraft. Made from a book, an ink sac and a feather, it opens a hundred-page editor where you can type notes, instructions, coordinates, server rules or a story, and signing it converts it into a Written Book with a title and your name as the author — permanent, uneditable and copyable. That copy mechanic is what makes it genuinely useful on servers: a signed book can be duplicated by crafting it with another book and quill, so a set of rules, a shop price list or a guide can be handed to every new player. In single-player its best use is unglamorous and very effective: a coordinates book kept in a chest by the door listing your portal, your mine, the village, and the ocean monument you found and lost. Lecterns display a written book for anyone to read without taking it, which is how server spawn areas post information. Writing supports basic formatting and page breaks. It is the only item in the game that stores something the world itself cannot.

Book and Quill is a crafting material item in Minecraft 1.21.4. It does not stack — each one takes its own slot. You make it with Book, Ink Sac, and Feather.
No recipe takes it as an ingredient.
How to get it
Craft 1 from 1 Book, 1 Ink Sac and 1 Feather. Ink sacs come from squid, which drop 1 to 3 each, so a single fishing trip supplies several quills.
Tips
- Keep a coordinates book by the door; it survives world reloads better than your memory does.
- Sign the book only when you are finished — a signed book cannot be edited again, only copied.
- Copy a signed book by crafting it with an empty book and quill; copies of copies eventually stop working.
- Place a written book on a lectern so visitors can read it without taking it out of the chest.
