Goat Horn

Goat Horn

Miscellaneous

Overview

A Goat Horn plays one long note that carries 256 blocks — far further than shouting in chat and far enough to signal across a whole build site or a server's spawn area. There are eight of them, and they are genuinely different sounds rather than pitch shifts of one: Ponder, Sing, Seek and Feel come only from pillager outpost chests, while Admire, Call, Yearn and Dream are dropped by goats that ram a solid block. Each horn has a 7-second cooldown between blows, and using one from a dispenser works too, which is how players build alarm systems for a base or a start signal for a race. The collection angle is the real appeal: eight distinct horns is a set, and the goat-dropped four require deliberately provoking a goat into charging into stone, which is a comedy in itself. Screaming goats — roughly one in 50 goat spawns — ram far more often, so a screaming goat penned against a stone wall is an effective horn farm. Horns do not stack, so displaying them takes an item frame each.

Long-range signalling across 256 blocks — calling players together on a server, marking the start of an event, or triggering an audible alarm from a dispenser.

Goat Horn is a miscellaneous item in Minecraft 1.21.4. It does not stack — each one takes its own slot. The usual source is Goat.

No recipe takes it as an ingredient.

How to get it

Get 4 variants from pillager outpost chests, at around a 50% chance per outpost. The other 4 drop when a goat rams a solid block; screaming goats, about 1 in 50 spawns, charge far more often.

Tips

  • Pen a screaming goat facing a stone wall; each successful ram drops one horn and the goat is unharmed.
  • Each horn has a 7-second cooldown, so a chorus needs several horns rather than one played quickly.
  • Dispensers can blow horns, which turns a tripwire or pressure plate into a base alarm heard 256 blocks away.
  • Horns do not stack, so a full set of 8 takes 8 inventory slots or 8 item frames to display.

Version notes

Added in 1.19 with four outpost variants; the four goat-dropped variants came with the same update, and 1.20 made them playable from dispensers.

Frequently asked questions

How do you make Goat Horn in Minecraft?

Goat Horn has no crafting recipe — it drops from Goat.

What is the stack size of Goat Horn?

Goat Horn does not stack at all. Every one you carry takes an inventory slot of its own, which is the practical limit on how many you take on a trip.
