Overview
In Minecraft 1.21.4, Sandstone is a building block. Sandstone is made at a crafting table. Hardness 0.8 puts it in the middle of the pack for mining speed.
Mine it with a wooden pickaxe or better, or you get no drop at all. Broken correctly, it drops itself. It offers almost no protection from explosions (0.8 blast resistance).
A full stack holds 64. It is crafted from Sand. Its main value is as a crafting ingredient: 8 recipes need it, Cut Sandstone, Dune Armor Trim, Sandstone Slab and 5 more among them.
About the sandstone set
How long it takes to break
Sandstone has a hardness of 0.8. By hand that is 4 seconds per block; with the correct tool at netherite tier it is 0.15 seconds.
An iron tool takes 0.2 seconds and a diamond one 0.15, so the jump that actually matters for this block is the one to diamond.
It will break below wooden, and you will get nothing for it. That combination of time spent and drop lost is the classic mining mistake.
The Efficiency formula is level² + 1 added to tool speed — at V that is about 3 times the unenchanted rate.
| Tool | No enchantment | Efficiency III | Efficiency V |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hand * | 4 s | 4 s | 4 s |
| Wooden | 0.6 s | 0.1 s | instant |
| Stone | 0.3 s | 0.1 s | instant |
| Iron | 0.2 s | 0.1 s | instant |
| Diamond | 0.15 s | 0.1 s | instant |
| Netherite | 0.15 s | 0.1 s | instant |
| Golden | 0.1 s | 0.1 s | instant |
Properties
Sandstone has a blast resistance of 0.8, so any explosion nearby destroys it. It blocks light completely and emits no light of its own. One inventory slot holds 64, the normal full stack. The block is tagged for pickaxes, and only that class gets the speed bonus; everything else mines at bare-hand rate.
