Oak Sapling

Overview

An oak sapling is a planted oak tree waiting to happen, and it is the block that makes wood renewable. Plant one on dirt, grass, podzol, coarse dirt, mud or rooted dirt with a light level of at least 9 and enough space above it, and it will grow on its own over a few minutes, or instantly with enough bone meal. Oak needs a 1-block footprint and roughly 5 blocks of headroom for the standard tree, and if there is more space it can occasionally grow the fancy variant, which is taller and wider with branching limbs. That randomness is worth knowing when planting a row: give each sapling a gap of at least 1 block so a fancy tree does not fail to grow because its neighbour is in the way. Saplings drop from oak leaves at roughly 5 percent, so a single felled tree usually replaces itself several times over. They can also be composted, which is the standard way to turn surplus saplings into bone meal for the rest of the farm. Saplings will not grow under a ceiling lower than the tree needs, so an indoor farm has to be built tall.

Regrowing oak trees so that wood, charcoal and apples all stay renewable indefinitely, and composting surplus saplings into the bone meal that a crop farm runs on.

Minecraft classifies Oak Sapling as a plant block. It has no crafting recipe — you collect it by mining it where it generates. A hardness of 0 means it is one of the quicker blocks to clear.

No specific tool is required to collect it. Broken correctly, it drops itself. Because it is transparent it does not block light.

A blast resistance of 0 means a single creeper will clear it away. It stacks to 64. Nothing on the crafting grid is made from it.

About the oak set

Oak is the wood every player meets first, and the whole set behaves the same way: planks, stairs, slabs, fences, doors, trapdoors, signs, buttons and pressure plates share one hardness of 2, one blast resistance of 3, and one rule — an axe is faster but never required, and every piece drops itself. What separates the woods is colour and, for two of them, availability: oak and birch generate in the starting biomes, while cherry, mangrove and pale oak need a specific biome to be found at all. Because the recipes are identical across the set, anything you learn here transfers: four planks make a crafting table, six make a door, six make three trapdoors. The one place they differ is fuel — every wooden item burns in a furnace for 15 seconds, and a set of stairs is worth exactly as much fuel as the planks it was made from, so smelting with leftover stairs is never wasteful.

How to get it

Break oak leaves for a roughly 5 percent sapling chance per block, so one felled tree replaces itself several times. Plant on dirt or grass at light level 9 or higher with 5 blocks of headroom.

Tips

Leave at least 1 block between saplings so a fancy oak has room to grow instead of failing.
Bone meal grows a sapling instantly, usually in 2 or 3 applications, which is the fastest tree farm there is.
Saplings compost well, so put leftovers in a composter rather than throwing them away.
It needs light level 9 to grow, so an indoor tree farm needs a torch or lantern beside every sapling.

Oak Sapling has a hardness of 0. By hand that is 0 seconds per block; with the correct tool at netherite tier it is 0 seconds.

There is no tier requirement to worry about. Any tool, or none, returns the drop; the numbers below just say how fast.

Efficiency contributes its level squared plus one to tool speed, and on something this soft that reaches instant mining almost at once.

Properties

Oak Sapling resists blasts at 0, which is not enough to survive anything explosive nearby. Light passes through it, and it emits none of its own. One inventory slot holds 64, the normal full stack. It is renewable, so a single world can supply an unlimited amount of it. It catches easily (encouragement 60, burn 100), so keep lava and open flame well away from it and from anything next to it. The fastest tool for it is an axe; any other kind of tool mines it no faster than a bare hand does, because the speed bonus only applies to the tool class the block is tagged for. As furnace fuel it burns for 5 seconds — half of what a single smelting operation needs.
