Overview
Oak leaves are the canopy block, and they are the only leaves in the game that drop apples. Break a leaf block by hand or with any tool and there is roughly a 5 percent chance of an oak sapling and about a 0.5 percent chance of an apple, so clearing a full canopy usually yields a sapling or two and, if you are lucky, a single apple — which is why apples feel scarce despite oak being everywhere. Shears collect the leaf block itself, which is the only way to use leaves as a building material, and a hoe is the fastest tool for clearing them. Leaves decay on their own when the nearest log is more than a few blocks away, which is why a felled tree's canopy disappears over the following minute and why a leaf wall built by hand needs shear-collected blocks rather than natural ones. Leaves are transparent to light but block line of sight, they can be waterlogged in some circumstances, and they slow you slightly when you walk through them. Bone meal on leaves has no effect.
Saplings for replanting so wood stays renewable, apples for early food, and — when collected with shears — a green building block for hedges, topiary and canopy detailing above a path.
Oak Leaves is a plant block in Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.4. With a hardness of 0.2 it gives way immediately under almost any tool. Any tool works, and so do bare hands.
Because it is transparent it does not block light. A blast resistance of 0.2 means a single creeper will clear it away. It stacks to 64.
Nothing on the crafting grid is made from it.
About the oak set
How to get it
Break them with shears to collect the block itself, or with any tool for a 5 percent sapling and roughly 0.5 percent apple chance. A hoe clears them fastest; naturally placed leaves decay once their tree is felled.
Tips
- Only shears collect the leaf block; every other tool gives you saplings and apples instead.
- A hoe breaks leaves far faster than an axe or a sword, which matters when clearing a large canopy.
- Shear-collected leaves never decay when placed, unlike leaves left behind by a felled tree.
- Oak is the only common tree that drops apples, at roughly 0.5 percent per leaf block.
How long it takes to break
Oak Leaves has a hardness of 0.2. By hand that is 0.3 seconds per block; with the correct tool at netherite tier it is 0.05 seconds.
No particular tool tier is required: any tool, or none at all, still yields the drop, so the table below is about speed rather than about whether you get anything.
Efficiency contributes its level squared plus one to tool speed, and on something this soft that reaches instant mining almost at once.
| Tool | No enchantment | Efficiency III | Efficiency V |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hand | 0.3 s | 0.3 s | 0.3 s |
| Wooden | 0.15 s | instant | instant |
| Stone | 0.1 s | instant | instant |
| Iron | instant | instant | instant |
| Diamond | instant | instant | instant |
| Netherite | instant | instant | instant |
| Golden | instant | instant | instant |
Properties
Blast resistance on Oak Leaves is 0.2, so any explosion nearby takes it out. It lets light pass and gives off no light. Stack size is 64 — the standard full stack. It renews, so a single world will never run out. Fire takes to it quickly — encouragement 30, burn 60 — which makes it a poor neighbour for lava or a lit campfire. A hoe is fastest here; any other class mines it at bare-hand speed, because the bonus only applies to the class the block is tagged for.

A stack is 64, and a double chest of them comes to 3,456.
Is Oak Leaves renewable?
Yes. Oak Leaves can be obtained again and again in one world, so building with it does not exhaust the supply.
