Overview
A grass block is dirt with a living surface, and it does more work than its ubiquity suggests. It spreads: a grass block adjacent to plain dirt with adequate light will convert that dirt over time, which is how a dug-out area heals itself and how a landscaped build eventually looks natural. It grows: tall grass, flowers and saplings all need it or dirt, and bone meal on a grass block sprouts the flowers and grass native to the biome it is in — which is why a bone-mealed flower forest produces alliums and tulips while a plains does not. It supports spawning: passive animals spawn on grass in daylight, and hostile mobs spawn on it at night, so an unlit grass field beside a base is a mob farm you did not intend to build. Mined without Silk Touch it drops plain dirt, so building with grass means bringing the enchantment. A hoe turns it into farmland and a shovel turns it into a dirt path, both of which stop the grass entirely. Endermen pick up grass blocks and carry them off, which is a small but real reason to fence a landscaped garden.
Growing flowers, tall grass and saplings, spawning passive animals for a food supply, and providing the surface that bone meal turns into biome-specific flowers for dye.
Grass Block counts as a plant block in Minecraft 1.21.4. It is gathered by mining rather than crafted. With a hardness of 0.6 it gives way immediately under almost any tool.
Any tool works, and so do bare hands. What you actually collect is Dirt. A blast resistance of 0.6 means a single creeper will clear it away.
It stacks to 64. Nothing on the crafting grid is made from it.
How to get it
Mine it with a Silk Touch shovel to keep the grass; any other tool drops plain dirt. Grass spreads on its own to adjacent dirt at light level 9 or above, so 1 block eventually covers an area.
Tips
- Bone meal on grass produces the flowers native to that biome, so use it in a flower forest for rare dyes.
- Silk Touch is the only way to collect the block itself; everything else gives you dirt.
- Grass spreads to adjacent dirt at light level 9 or above, so a dug-out area heals itself over time.
- A shovel makes a dirt path and a hoe makes farmland — both are one click and neither is reversible by itself.
How long it takes to break
At a hardness of 0.6, Grass Block takes 0.9 seconds to punch out and 0.1 seconds with a netherite-tier tool of the correct class.
There is no tier requirement to worry about. Any tool, or none, returns the drop; the numbers below just say how fast.
Each Efficiency level adds level² + 1 to the tool's speed, so a level V tool clears this about 2 times faster than an unenchanted one.
| Tool | No enchantment | Efficiency III | Efficiency V |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hand | 0.9 s | 0.9 s | 0.9 s |
| Wooden | 0.45 s | 0.1 s | instant |
| Stone | 0.25 s | 0.1 s | instant |
| Iron | 0.15 s | 0.1 s | instant |
| Diamond | 0.15 s | instant | instant |
| Netherite | 0.1 s | instant | instant |
| Golden | 0.1 s | instant | instant |
Properties
With 0.6 blast resistance Grass Block goes down to any nearby explosion. It is fully opaque and produces no light. One inventory slot holds 64, the normal full stack. It is renewable, so a single world can supply an unlimited amount of it. The fastest tool for it is a shovel; any other kind of tool mines it no faster than a bare hand does, because the speed bonus only applies to the tool class the block is tagged for. Broken normally it drops Dirt rather than itself; Silk Touch is what returns the block, and Fortune raises the ordinary drop instead.
