Overview
A decorated pot is built from four faces, and each face can be either a plain brick or a pottery sherd — one of the archaeology items brushed out of suspicious sand and suspicious gravel. Since there are more than twenty sherd designs and each of the four faces is independent, the number of distinct pots you can make runs into the hundreds of thousands, which is the point: it is a decoration block that no two players will assemble the same way. Since 1.21 it is also a container. A decorated pot holds one stack of a single item type, hoppers can push into it and pull out of it, and a comparator reads how full it is — which makes it the smallest usable storage block in the game and a genuinely tidy way to put a single item on display. Break it by hand and it drops as a pot; break it with a projectile and it shatters, dropping the individual sherds and bricks it was made from. That shattering is deliberate, and it is how you recover a sherd you have used on the wrong face.
Displaying archaeology finds as decoration, storing a single stack of one item where a chest would be too large, and giving a comparator a fill reading from the smallest container in the game.
Decorated Pot counts as a decorative block in Minecraft 1.21.4. Decorated Pot has a crafting recipe, so it is renewable as long as you can source its ingredients. With a hardness of 0 it gives way immediately under almost any tool.
Any tool works, and so do bare hands. Mining it returns the block itself, so it is safe to relocate. It is transparent, which matters when you are managing light levels.
With a blast resistance of only 0 it will not survive an explosion. Sixty-four fit in one inventory slot. The recipe calls for Brick.
It is not used in any crafting recipe.
How to get it
Craft it from 4 pottery sherds, 4 bricks, or any mix of the two. Sherds come from brushing suspicious sand and gravel in desert temples, desert wells, trail ruins, warm ocean ruins and cold ocean ruins.
Tips
- It stores exactly 1 stack of 1 item type, and a hopper can both fill and empty it.
- Break it with an arrow or a snowball to shatter it and recover the 4 sherds and bricks it was made from.
- Breaking it by hand keeps the pot whole, so use a pickaxe or your fist when you are just moving it.
- Bring a brush to every desert temple: suspicious sand is destroyed by any other tool and the sherd is lost.
Version notes
Decorated pots and archaeology arrived in 1.20 (Trails & Tales). The pot gained its 1-stack inventory and comparator output in 1.21; nothing changed in 1.21.4.
