Candle

Overview

A candle is the small light source that can be placed several to a block, and its brightness scales with how many are there: one candle gives light level 3, two give 6, three give 9 and four give 12. That is dimmer than a torch at every stage, which makes candles atmospheric rather than practical — they will not spawn-proof a room on their own, and that is precisely the point for builders who want a dim interior without total darkness. They must be lit with flint and steel or a fire charge after placing, and they can be extinguished by hand or with a water bottle, which makes them the only light in the game with an on and off state that needs no redstone. Candles come in all 16 dyed colours plus the undyed variety, and they can be waterlogged, in which case they are unlit but still visible. Their other role is the birthday cake: up to one candle can be placed on a cake, and eating a slice removes it. Honeycomb and string make four candles, so a beehive supplies them.

Candle is a building block in Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.4. Candle has a crafting recipe, so it is renewable as long as you can source its ingredients. With a hardness of 0.1 it gives way immediately under almost any tool.

Any tool works, and so do bare hands. Mining it returns the block itself, so it is safe to relocate. It is transparent, which matters when you are managing light levels.

With a blast resistance of only 0.1 it will not survive an explosion. Sixty-four fit in one inventory slot. The recipe calls for String and Honeycomb.

It is an ingredient in 16 recipes, among them Black Candle, Blue Candle, Brown Candle and 13 more.

How to get it

Craft 1 candle from 1 honeycomb and 1 string. Honeycomb comes 3 at a time from shearing a full beehive or bee nest, so a single hive keeps a base supplied with candles indefinitely.

Tips

Up to 4 candles fit in 1 block space, and each one adds 3 to the light level, topping out at 12.
Light them with flint and steel after placing; a freshly placed candle is always unlit.
A water bottle or a hand puts them out again, which is the only redstone-free light switch in the game.
Waterlogged candles cannot be lit, so keep them out of a fountain if you want them burning.

Properties

Candle has a blast resistance of 0.1, so any explosion nearby destroys it. It lets light through and emits no light of its own. Stack size is 64 — the standard full stack.
