Overview

A bee nest is the naturally generated home of bees, and it is where every honeycomb, honey bottle and beehive in your world ultimately starts. Nests generate on trees in a handful of biomes at very different rates: meadows generate one on their single lone tree almost every time, plains and sunflower plains at roughly 5 percent, flower forests at around 2 percent, and ordinary forests and birch forests only rarely. A nest holds up to 3 bees and fills with honey as they pollinate, passing through 5 honey levels; at level 5 the nest visibly drips, and you can either shear it for 3 honeycomb or use a glass bottle for 1 honey bottle. Doing either without a campfire underneath makes every bee inside hostile immediately, which is the mistake everyone makes once. A campfire placed up to 5 blocks below the nest, with the smoke reaching it, calms them completely. Silk Touch is the only way to move a nest with its bees still inside; break it any other way and the bees are lost and the nest drops nothing.

Honeycomb for waxing copper and crafting beehives and candles, honey bottles for food that cures Poison, and a breeding stock of bees to pollinate a crop farm for faster growth.

Bee Nest counts as a functional block in Minecraft 1.21.4. It breaks almost instantly, with a hardness of just 0.3. You can break it by hand without losing the drop.

A blast resistance of 0.3 means a single creeper will clear it away. It stacks to 64. Nothing on the crafting grid is made from it.

How to get it

Break it with a Silk Touch tool to keep the nest and its 3 bees. Nests generate on trees in meadows almost always, in plains at about 5 percent and in flower forests at about 2 percent.

Tips

  • Put a campfire up to 5 blocks under the nest before shearing or bottling, or every bee turns hostile at once.
  • Silk Touch moves the nest with all 3 bees inside; any other tool destroys it and the bees scatter.
  • Shears give 3 honeycomb and a bottle gives 1 honey — pick based on whether you need wax or food.
  • Bees pollinating crops speed up growth, so a hive beside a wheat field is a genuine productivity gain.

How long it takes to break

Hardness 0.3 puts Bee Nest at 0.45 seconds a block bare-handed, or 0.05 seconds with the right tool at netherite tier.

The drop does not depend on the tool — bare hands work as well as anything — so the table below is purely about speed.

The Efficiency formula is level² + 1 added to tool speed, which on a block this soft tips over into instant mining very early.

Properties

With 0.3 blast resistance Bee Nest goes down to any nearby explosion. It is fully opaque and produces no light. One inventory slot holds 64, the normal full stack. The block is tagged for axes, and only that class gets the speed bonus; everything else mines at bare-hand rate.
