Overview
Minecraft classifies Basalt as a Nether block. There is no way to craft it; you have to find it and mine it. Its hardness of 1.25 makes it a normal, unhurried block to mine.
Anything below a wooden pickaxe breaks it without leaving a drop. It drops as the same block you mined. It stacks to 64.
You will need it for Polished Basalt and Smooth Basalt.
How long it takes to break
At a hardness of 1.25, Basalt takes 6.3 seconds to punch out and 0.25 seconds with a netherite-tier tool of the correct class.
Iron manages 0.35 seconds and diamond 0.25, which makes diamond the tier that changes how this block feels.
A weaker tool still breaks it, but anything under wooden returns nothing — you spend the time and lose the drop, which is how most veins get wasted.
The Efficiency formula is level² + 1 added to tool speed — at V that is about 2.5 times the unenchanted rate.

Properties
Blast resistance on Basalt is 4.2, so an explosion nearby will usually take it out. It stops light entirely and gives off no light. A single slot takes 64, the usual full stack. Being renewable, it can be produced indefinitely in one world. A pickaxe is fastest here; any other class mines it at bare-hand speed, because the bonus only applies to the class the block is tagged for.
