Minecraft counts in 64s, and human beings do not. Every large build eventually forces the same arithmetic: you need 2,700 blocks of deepslate bricks, and you want to know whether that fits in a shulker box, how many trips it is, and how many you are short. This does the division for you at all three stack sizes the game uses, and then converts the result into the containers you actually carry.

Most things stack to 64. A short list stacks to 16 — eggs, snowballs, ender pearls, signs, honey bottles, buckets of fish. Tools, weapons, armour, potions, buckets, boats, minecarts, beds and anything with durability do not stack at all. Pick an item from the list and the stack size fills itself in from Mojang’s own data, so you never have to remember which category something is in; or override it if you are planning around a modded or hypothetical item.

The container figures assume every slot is filled with the same item, which is the right assumption when you are packing bulk materials and the wrong one when you are packing an adventure kit.

How many individual items you have

Chaqiq tosh stacks to 64.

1,000 × Chaqiq tosh at a stack size of 64 fills 16 inventory slots.

1,000 items broken down at each of the three stack sizes in the game.

Storage at a stack size of 64

58%
Shulker Box (holds 1,728)
58%
Chest (holds 1,728)
29%
Double Chest (holds 3,456)
43%
Player inventory (holds 2,304)

A shulker box and a single chest both hold 27 slots, so both hold 1,728 of a normal stacking item. A double chest is 54 slots, or 3,456. A shulker box full of shulker boxes is not possible — shulker boxes cannot be nested — but a double chest of full shulker boxes holds 54 × 1,728 = 93,312 items, which is 1,458 stacks.

How this works

The arithmetic

For a quantity q and a stack size s: full stacks are floor(q ÷ s), the remainder is q mod s, and the number of inventory slots you need is ceil(q ÷ s) — the remainder still occupies a whole slot even when it holds a single item. That last distinction is the one that catches people out when they are working out whether a load fits.

Container capacities

  • Shulker box — 27 slots, so 1,728 of a 64-stacking item
  • Chest — 27 slots, the same 1,728
  • Double chest — 54 slots, 3,456
  • Player inventory — 36 slots including the hotbar, 2,304

Shulker boxes keep their contents when broken, which is what makes them the unit of bulk transport. They cannot be nested inside one another, so the practical maximum you can move in one trip is your inventory as shulker boxes: 27 boxes in the 27 non-hotbar-adjacent slots is the usual packing, though most players carry fewer to leave room for tools.

A worked example

2,700 cobblestone. At a stack size of 64: 2,700 ÷ 64 = 42 full stacks with a remainder of 12, because 42 × 64 = 2,688 and 2,700 − 2,688 = 12. That needs 43 slots — the twelve leftovers still take a whole slot. A shulker box holds 27 slots, so this is two shulker boxes (27 + 16 slots used), and it comfortably fits in a single double chest, which has 54 slots and holds 3,456.

A caveat on the item list

Stack sizes come straight from Mojang’s item data for Java Edition 1.21, so they are exact for that version. Two things they do not capture: bundles, which hold one stack’s worth of mixed items rather than a fixed count, and the fact that a few items behave differently in Bedrock Edition. If you are playing Bedrock, check anything unusual before planning a build around it.
